Words like “rough service” or “heavy duty” can instantly increase a person’s comfort level, whether they’re purchasing PDA accessories or power tools. Let’s face it, those words instantly lead us to believe that whatever we’re buying can survive anything short of a nuclear explosion. We instantly believe that the item is designed to withstand whatever rough use and treatment we can throw at it. The reality is that, while it may afford somewhat better protection than a typical case, what’s important is how the rough service PDA case fits the unit, and the amount of abuse we typically throw at it.
A handheld can cost hundreds of dollars, and the information stored on it is probably priceless to you. A rough service PDA case can increase your comfort level, knowing there are extra layers of protection for your valuable unit. People who work in rough environments, such as industrial or construction, will definitely need this level of protection.
But does the average user? In most cases, these PDAs won’t see any rougher environment than a 4pm meeting that’s running long. Those who work in an office setting may not see the need for a rough service PDA case. But there is a place around the office where a handheld can suffer more damage than most people would believe: the inside of a briefcase. Pens, pencils, hardcover notebooks, clipboards and binder clips can all damage an unprotected PDA while rattling around inside a briefcase. Throw in some eating utensils for lunch and some serious damage can occur.
Providing More Protection for the Money
Most rough service PDA cases do not cost that much more than a regular case designed for normal use. Realistically, many people do not equate their occupation with normal use and may want to consider having a rough service PDA case for the one or two times when the environment may require such protective steps.
Usually, all it takes is having the unit damaged by being jostled around to make them realize that for a few dollars more they could have saved a valuable piece of equipment by using a rough service PDA case. On the downside, those who do use a rough service PDA case may forget how delicate their equipment is and figure if they accidentally leave it on the roof of their car when the drive away, the handheld will be protected from the fall.
The unit inside a rough service PDA case may survive the bounce off the pavement but regardless of how heavy duty the case may be, it probably will not survive being run over by another vehicle in the parking lot or on the road.
You can browse and purchase rough service PDA cases and thousands of other PDA accessories at eBay and Amazon.com.
