OtterBox PDA Case Review
Many PDA owners tend to be concerned, perhaps even obsessed, with keeping their PDAs clean and scratch-free. Because of this they’re often reluctant to take their PDA with them when they go places they feel may be a place their PDA may get damaged, like the swimming pool or the beach. Now, thanks to OtterBox and their line of heavy-duty protective PDA cases, they can be confident that their PDAs are protected from just about everything that could be thrown at them.
One thing to be said about OtterBox cases is that they are not easy to get your PDA into quickly; expect to spend at least 20 minutes before your PDA is correctly and snugly installed. Once it is in, however, you can rest assured that it is safe.
OtterBox cases are designed to protect PDAs from practically anything: dirt and dust, drops, bumps, and even water. They are not water-proof, but they are water-resistant. You can’t go swimming with your PDA, but if you drop it in the water and quickly fish it out, it will be safe. Using your PDA in the shower is now possible, although why anyone would want to is another matter.
The great thing about OtterBox cases isn’t that they just protects your PDA, but that you can still use your PDA while in the case. While all the buttons may not be reachable, you can still view the screen and therefore use a touch stylus with it. The cases even include a stylus holder so you don’t have to open it up the get the stylus out. If your PDA has speakers, you can hear them even while it is in the case, and a rubber grommet allows you to plug in your headphones while it is still in the case. The bottom of the case has a large rubber plug, which can be removed to allow syncing your PDA while still in the case.
The biggest negative agains OtterBox cases are their sheer bulk. The size is part of what protects the PDA so well, but this case will definitely not fit in a pocket. There is also a somewhat limited list of compatible PDAs that will actually fit into OtterBoxes: consult their website before buying one to see which case, if any, your PDA will fit into.
Many companies are reluctant to deploy mainstream PDAs for a rather mundane reason: they’re not rugged enough for those who use them in harsh outdoor conditions. Ruggedized PDAs can cost up to $2,000 dollars. For under $100, an OtterBox case can protect your PDA from just about anything you can throw at it.
